More Information About Seaside Books

  • Seaside Books doesn’t have a storefront or permanent space (yet.). We take our shop on the road and set up a table or stall at events and gatherings across the Newry, Mourne, and Down area. In the future, we hope to purchase a van or bus in the future to turn into a bookshop on wheels.

  • Ireland has a strong literary history and has produced some of the greatest writers of our time. That strong tradition of storytelling is present today in the wealth of amazing authors and publishers supporting the rich, complex, and joyous stories of people all over the island. We want to connect people with great Irish writing that they might not know about otherwise. We love to showcase books that challenge our understanding of what it means to be Irish and that are being published by small and independent Irish publishers.

  • Seaside Books is a family operation. I (Alanna) do the book reading, social media, website, etc. Hickory, my daughter, does book reviews of children’s books and helps me choose which children’s books to stock. My partner Casey helps me carry heavy boxes of books and figures out anything that has to do with numbers and math and also listens to me agonize about all the little difficulties of running a business.

None of it would be possible without the network of friends and family both in the United States and in Ireland who help us out and make us laugh.

The real bosses around here are our cat Chainsaw and our tortoise Pumpkin, they are hard to please but we do our best.

  • I would like to say that I have a specific process for how I select a book, but the truth is I go off my gut instinct. I read A LOT and try to read every book I recommend to others.

I follow lots of people on social media who love books, and I read book reviews all the time. When something intrigues me, I pick it up (always buying from an independent bookseller).

If there is a book you have been loving and that is written by an Irish author or from an Irish press, do pass that information on to us. We love to check your recommendations.

  • We want our classes and workshops to be accessible to the most people possible. We offer our Weekly Writer’s Workshop and Poetry That Doesn’t Suck courses for free because we think everyone should be able to learn more about how to tell their story. Our more advanced classes involved more one-on-one support and class preparation so we change. The money we charge for these classes allows us to offer other classes for free.

  • We keep everyone updated on where we will be through our social media pages and our monthly newsletter.
